Prayer ministry, mandala art, and creative meditation
Michael works as a prayer minister at Silent Unity, where they pray with people about any concern. Their drawings serve as a meditation practice while in prayer, inspired by the people they serve. That spiritual creativity extends through intricate ink and pencil mandalas and abstract line art. Their work has appeared in several Kansas City area galleries and juried art shows. Michael draws mandalas and line art; the symmetry and balance help them stay in a higher consciousness. They also play the organ. A Zentangle class at Unity Village in 2013 uncovered a hidden drawing talent. They grew up in a small town in Iowa, lived for a time in the Washington, D.C., area, and now call Kansas City home.

From prayer to pattern, drawing as meditation
Michael Phelps (&fooz.barz) is a Kansas City visual artist working in ink, colored pencil and black-and-white drawing. Phelps connects a practice that begins with a Zentangle class at Unity Village to prayer at Silent Unity, developing mandalas and increasingly abstract line drawings. In the essay “Drawing on Spirit,” making art becomes a meditation practice, a way of focusing attention on the present moment.
